UMaine Women win, Men lose in road basketball tournaments Sunday

The University of Maine basketball teams both are competing in road tournaments over the next several days, including Sunday where the teams split.

The Maine Womens team got 16 points from Laia Sole to take down Saint Peters University 59-43 in Columbia, South Carolina at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Womens Challenge.

Tanesha Sutton had eight points, nine rebounds, and six assists and senior guard Sigi Koizar chipped in eight points and three steals, as Maine improved to 2-2 on the season and broke a two game losing streak.

Maine only turned the ball over seven times in the game, while turning over the Peacocks 26 times which resulted in a 26-2 Black Bear advantage in points. Alyssa Valles led St Peters (0-2) with 12 points.

Maine continues play in the Womens Challenge when it plays host #3 South Carolina Monday night at 7 p.m.

 

After a 102-78 loss to Boston University Saturday, the Maine Mens basketball team came up short Sunday in a 80-72 loss to Northeastern in day two of the Steve Wright Classic in Boston, Massachusetts.

Wes Myers led Maine (1-3) with 19 points, while Vincent Eze had 14 points and nine rebounds.

TJ Williams had a game high 26 points to lead Northeastern (3-2), that included 10 for 12 at the foul line and 10 assists. The Huskies made 21 for 29 at the line as the Black Bears committed 23 fouls in the contest.

Maine will face LIU-Brooklyn Monday at 3 p.m. in the final day of the tournament.
