Sigi Koizar had a season high 25 points Tuesday evening, but it wasn’t enough as the Maine Womens basketball team dropped a 58-49 decision to Hampton in the final day of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Womens Challenge at Columbia, South Carolina.
Maine started strong taking an early 13-3 lead in the first quarter, but the Pirates closed the half on a 23-14 run of their own to cut the lead to 27-26 at the half.
The third quarter belonged to Hampton (2-4), as the Black Bears shot only 3 for 19 in the period and got outscored 15-6 as the Pirates took an eight point lead to the final quarter.
The Bears would climb within four in the final ten minutes of action, but got no closer in losing their second consecutive game and wound up 1-2 in the tournament and falling to 2-4 overall on the season.
Koizar had four rebounds and a steal to go along with her game high in points. She scored the first 10 points in the second half for Maine that stretched into the fourth quarter. Kaylah Lupoe led Hampton with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Black Bears turned the ball over 18 times in the contest.
Maine returns to action Sunday at 6 p.m. in a neutral site non conference matchup with the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.
