The #11 Miami Hurricanes Womens basketball team put three players in double figures to take down the University of Maine 76-51 Tuesday evening in the Miami Holiday Classic Title game at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida.
The Black Bears were able to stay within 12-14 points for a good portion of the game, until Miami opened it up with a 7-0 run to begin the final period to take a 20 point lead. The Hurricanes led by as many as 27 points in the final 10 minutes of action in winning their 11th consecutive game, improving to 11-1.
Adrienne Motley scored a game high 21 points on 8-9 shooting (3-3 from three point arc). Jessica Thomas added 12 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and also scored her 1,000th career point. Erykah Davenport chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. The ‘Canes shot nearly 52 percent from the floor, compared to just 35 percent for the visiting Bears.
Maine (7-6), who also had their four game winning streak snapped, was led by Tanesha Sutton who had 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Julie Brousseau came off the bench to add 10 points. Leading scorer Sigi Koizar was held to seven points and four assists. Koizar did swish a half court shot to beat the second quarter buzzer to get Maine back within 13 at halftime.
East Tennessee State took home third place in the two day tournament with a 70-58 win over Coppin State earlier in the day.
Next up for Maine is a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana to battle Tulane Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. Miami will stay home and host ACC rival Florida State Thursday at 7 p.m.
