Strong second half carries Tulane past Maine in Womens basketball action

The Tulane Green Wave outscored visiting Maine 46-28 in the second half Wednesday afternoon to earn a 77-62 non-conference win at Devlin FieldHouse in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Green Wave stay unbeaten at home this season, and carry an 11 game home winning streak.

Maine (7-7) got off to a hot start, jumping on top early 13-3. Tulane cut the lead to four after the first quarter, but Maine still held a 34-31 halftime advantage.

The third quarter was the decisive 10 minutes of the game, as Tulane outscored Maine 24-12 in the period to take a nine point lead to the fourth quarter.

Maine got within five early in the final quarter of play but no closer, as Tulane responded going up by as many as 16 to gain the victory improving to 9-4 on the season.

Sigi Koizar led the Black Bears with 24 points and seven rebounds. Julie Brousseau also came off the bench to chip in 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

Tulane put a pair of players over the 20 point plateau on the afternoon. Kolby Morgan led the way with a game-high 26 points, four rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Leslie Vorpahl had 24 points, a rebound, two blocks, and two steals. Vorpahl also surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career in the first quarter.

Maine shot 44 percent from the floor while Tulane shot a 55 percent clip. The Green Wave shot nearly 70 percent in the second half (66.67%). Maine also turned the ball over 15 times, and shot only 7-15 from the free throw line, while Tulane limited themselves to six turnovers, and shot 12-15 from the line.

Maine finishes up the non conference schedule on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they travel to Boston College. The game can be seen live on ESPN 3.
