GUILFORD— Erin Speed made 9-11 from the free throw line, including 5-6 in the fourth quarter to help the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates secure a 34-27 win over Dexter in a class C girls basketball game played Friday night.
The Pirates never trailed as Speed starting the scoring with a three pointer. Megan Peach evened things up when she made a basket and free throw. That is the last time the game would be tied. Sara Almirante made a free throw to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead with 4:14 remaining in the first quarter.
PCHS built the lead to 16-10 heading to halftime. Almiranate scored four points in the third quarter as the Pirates built the lead to 22-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
Abby Webber made 2 three pointers, while Addyson Herrick made one in the fourth quarter to keep the Tigers in the game. Speed locked down the victory with seven points in the final quarter, including the five from the free throw line.
Speed led the Pirates with 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Almirante added 11 points and two steals. Alivia Hunt recorded five points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Bailey Lemieux made a three pointer.
The Pirates shot 12-18 from the free throw line, while the Tigers shot 3-7. PCHS (5-2) will travel to Lee Acsdemy on Wednesday.
Peach led the Tigers with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks. Webber added eight points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Herrick had three points, while Kayli Cunningham recorded one point, five rebounds, and five steals.
The Tigers outrebounded PCHS 30-23. Dexter (4-2) will host Penquis on Monday night.
