BANGOR– Freshman Katie Hutchinson came off the bench to record 14 points, 13 rebounds, six steals, and two assists in leading the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners to a 51-23 win over Highview Christian in a class D girls basketball game on Tuesday afternoon at Eastern Maine Community College.
The Mariners never trailed as Lily Gray got the scoring started with a three pointer. They built the lead to 13-4 in the first quarter. Highview Christian scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the deficit to 13-9.
Deer Isle-Stonington went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter as the Mariners outscored the Knights 17-8 in the quarter to take a 30-18 halftime lead.
The Mariners out rebounded Highview Christian 48-15. Deer Isle-Stonington had five players that finished with at least five rebounds. They outscored the Knights 9-1 in the third quarter and 21-5 in the second half. Deer Isle-Stonington shot 4-12 from the free throw line, while Highview Christian shot 5-14.
Gray finished with 13 points (3 three pointers), five rebounds, and three steals. Orly Vaughn added eight points and six rebounds, Jess Gove recorded six points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Brienna Limeburner filled up the stat sheet with four points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Abbey Stinson and Mercedes Rice rounded out the scoring for the Mariners with four and two points respectively. Deer Isle-Stonington (4-4) will host Bangor Christian on Thursday.
Cassidy Lessner led the Knights with eight points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks. Kelsi Upham and Megan McDonald scored six points each, while Cassidy Burns put in three points. Highview Christian (1-6) will play at Islesboro Central on Saturday.
