Coach Amy Vachon (pictured above) coached her second consecutive game Wednesday night in the absence of Richard Barron.
The University of Maine Mens and Womens basketball teams were both in action Wednesday night against UMass-Lowell. And it was a win for both teams, with the women getting a convincing win at Lowell, and the men winning a thriller at home in Bangor.
In the womens contest, Maine outscored the home Riverhawks 27-6 in the second quarter, and rolled to a 65-44 America East win at the Costello Athletic Center in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Laia Sole led the way for Maine with 20 points, five rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Julie Brousseau had 12 points on 4-8 shooting from the three point arc. Brousseau also had four rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Fanny Wadling also had 12 points, grabbed six rebounds, an assist, a block, and two steals. Maine played their third straight game without Sigi Koizar (injury).
Kayla Gibbs lead UMass-Lowell (3-13, 0-3 America East) with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Maine (9-9, 2-1 AE) led by 26 in the game, which was the margin at halftime at 39-13. The Bears won their second straight conference game after dropping their first America East contest at Vermont. Maine scored 22 points off 23 Riverhawk turnovers, outscoring Lowell 22-7 in that department.
Next up for Maine is a trip to Stony Brook to battle the Seawolves Saturday at 1 p.m. The game can be seen nationally on ESPN 3.
In the mens game at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Wes Myers converted an unconventional three point play with just four seconds remaining to rally the Maine Black Bears to a 73-71 come from behind win over UMass-Lowell.
Myers continued to impress Wednesday night, finishing with 31 points (12-22), seven rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Autin Howard had 18 points, while Ryan Bernstein had 15 points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
The Riverhawks left by two at halftime and by 11 with just 9:41 left, before a furious Black Bear come back. Maine broke a seven game losing streak and goes to 5-13 overall and 1-2 in America East. Lowell had one more chance after the three point play by Myers, but a shot in the lane came up short as time expired.
For UMass-Lowell (7-10, 2-1 AE), Tyler Livingston had an impressive performance as well with 24 points, 10 rebounds, an assist, two blocks, and a steal. Livingston shot 9-16 from the field (5-6 from three point range). Jahad Thomas also had a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Thomas also had five assists and a steal as the Riverhawks lost their first conference game.
Maine continues the home stand on Saturday afternoon when they host Stony Brook at 2 p.m. That game can also be seen on ESPN 3.
