Road woes continue in Thursday night loss for Maine Hockey

The University of Maine Mens Hockey team continued to struggle on the road Thursday night, dropping a 6-3 decision to Connecticut in a Hockey East Association game at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Maine struck first as Rob Michel opened the scoring at 7:57 of the opening period to make it 1-0 Bears. Spencer Nass tied it for the Huskies even strength 3:50 later to make it 1-1. UConn took their first lead 3:47 after the tying goal, on a powerplay marker by Max Kalter.

Brendan Robbins made it 2-2 at 6:32 of the second, before Tag Thompson regained the Huskies lead 6:59 later making it 3-2. Nolan Vesey once again tied it for Maine just 1:31 later unassisted. Wyatt Newpower scored a powerplay goal that proved to be the game winner, to make it 4-3 Huskies with just 18 seconds left in the middle period.

Kasperi Ojantakanen scored with 5:41 left in the third period to make it 5-3, before Thompson finished off the scoring with an empty net goal with 57 seconds left.

Matt Morris made 32 saves on 38 shots, and took the loss in net for Maine. Adam Huska earned the win in the Connecticut net, making 23 saves on 26 shots. Maine was 0 for 4 on the powerplay, while UConn connected on 2 for 3 on the night. Robbins led Maine with a goal and an assist, while Cam Brown had two assists.

Maine is now 7-11-3 overall and falls to 1-7-1 in Hockey East. The Bears are now 0-7-3 on the road this season. Connecticut is now 9-7-6 and 5-3-2.

The same two teams will now head to Boston to faceoff at Fenway Park Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
