College basketball: Maine women fall at Durham, Wildcats win ninth straight; Men fall at home

The University of Maine womens basketball team dropped their third conference game of the season Thursday night, falling to New Hampshire 50-44 at Lundholm Gym in Durham, NH.

Both teams had trouble finding the range, especially in the first half. Maine only shot 29 percent and the home Wildcats only 23 percent in the first 20 minutes, but UNH held a 21-17 advantage at intermission.

Maine (10-11, 3-3 AE) got within two points at the end of the third quarter and got within two again in the fourth quarter. A late 6-0 UNH run built the lead to 10, as the Wildcats hung on to win their ninth straight game and also improve to 9-1 at home.

Blanca Millan led Maine with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Sigi Koizar put in nine points, had three rebounds, three steals, and an assist.

Maine ended up 32 percent from the floor on only 2-14 shooting from three point range, and was outrebounded 39-32.

UNH was led by Olivia Healy, who had 16 points, four rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Brittni Lai had 15 points, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. The Wildcats ended up shooting 39 percent from the floor after the tough first half of action. Head coach Maureen Magarity also earned her 100th win at UNH in the victory Thursday night.

Maine returns home to host Albany Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The game can also be seen live on ESPN 3.

In mens action Thursday night, Maine fell to UNH 74-63 at the Cross Insurance Center. Wes Myers led Maine with 25 points as the Black Bears fall to 5-16 and 1-5 in conference play.

Maine will visit Albany Sunday at 2 p.m. That game can also be seen on ESPN 3.
