The Woodland Dragons defeated Southern Aroostook 43-41 on Monday, handing the Warriors their first loss of he season.
Woodland opened the game with a 5-0 run before a Kylie Vinjng three pointer made it 5-3 with 4:22 left in the first quarter. Woodland held a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, the Warriors used a 2-2-1 full court press to cause four quick Woodland turnovers and knot the game at 12 apiece. Going into the half woodland led 16-12 as both teams shot under 40% in the half.
The second half was more of a back and forth battle with runs from each team. With 1:21 left in the 4th Madison Cummings of Southern Aroostook hit a putback to take a 41-40 lead. Woodland was able to convert on a second chance Jennie Cox layup to go up 42-41, while SA was unable to score on its next possession. Having to foul Cox who went 1 of 2 from the line for a 43-41 lead. Mikala Porter of Southern Aroostook had a look at a three that came up short at the buzzer.
With the win, Woodland (9-4) moved all the way up to fifth in the Maine Principals’ Association class C North heal point standings. Southern Aroostook (11-1) is second in the class D North standings.
