Maine moves back over .500 by cruising past Riverhawks

The Maine Black Bears put all 13 players that played Thursday night into the scorebook, and cruised past UMass-Lowell 76-50 in America East womens basketball action at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor before 1,050 fans.

With the weather cold and snowy outside, the Black Bears played some hot basketball inside in this one. Maine took good care of the basketball only committing eight turnovers, had 17 steals and six blocked shots. Maine forced 24 UMass-Lowell turnovers, outscoring the visitors 31-3 in points off turnovers in the contest. The Bears also assisted on 19 out of 29 made field goals.

Lowell took their only lead early at 2-0, but Maine took over from that point on, building a 22 point halftime lead and led by as many as 28 to win their second consecutive game. The Black Bears remain undefeated in conference games at home this season (5-0), and improved to 14-13 overall and 7-5 in America East.

Sigi Koizar led the way with 16 points (4-9 from three point arc), five assists, five steals, and three rebounds. Anita Kelava had 14 points and five rebounds. Laia Sole added nine points, while Naira Caceres and Tanesha Sutton both contributed seven points.

Kayla Gibbs and Katherine Smith both had 13 for the Riverhawks. Markayla Sherman added 10. UMass-Lowell is now 3-22 overall and 0-12 in America East, with their 12th consecutive loss.

Maine continues the home stand on Sunday at 1 p.m. by hosting Stony Brook. The game is the Play 4 Kay “pink game” to benefit cancer research. The game can also been seen live on ESPN 3.
