AUGUSTA- The Vinalhaven Vikings started their quarterfinal game Saturday afternoon on a 11-0 run, and never trailed, in rolling to a 71-37 Class D South girls quarterfinal basketball win over Highview Christian at the Augusta Civic Center.
The #2 Vikings outscored the #7 Knights 22-4 in the opening quarter, and built as much as a 38 point lead, in advancing to a Thursday morning semifinal against third seeded Temple Academy.
Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes led the way for Vinalhaven (15-4), with a game high 24 points, 10 rebounds, and one blocked shot. Ashlyn Littlefield had 19 points, three rebounds, and one steal. Paige Dennison added 11 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Also contributing was Deja Doughty and Cheyenne Bickford with six points a piece, Hannah Newton had four points, and Amber Shane had one point.
Highview Christian Academy out of Charleston, ended their season at 5-14. The Knights were led by junior center Cassidy Lessner who had 13 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and one blocked shot. Brooke Trafton added 10 points and six rebounds. Cassidy Burns had eight points, two rebounds, and one assist. Kelsi Upham added three points, Rachel Pomerleau had two points, and Martine Scott added one point.
The Vikings outrebounded the Knights 41-22. Highview shot 7-18 from the foul line, while Vinalhaven was 8-16. Highview had 15 turnovers, Vinalhaven with six. Highview was only able to hit 12 field goals in the game (six from two point range and six three pointers), while Vinalhaven had 30 made field goals (27 from two point range and three from behind the arc).
