BANGOR- Holly Preston scored 14 of her game high 24 points in the second half Thursday evening, to lead the Shead Tigers to a 51-29 over Washburn in a Class D semifinal schoolgirl basketball game at the Cross Insurance Center.
Shead held a 9-4 lead over the #6 Beavers after one quarter. But the turning point was the second quarter, as Shead held Washburn scoreless. The Tigers outscored the Beavers 11-0 in the quarter, including seven from Preston and four from Madison Greenlaw to take a 20-4 lead into halftime.
The run was continued to 13-0 with an early Preston basket in the third quarter, before Washburn guard Kassandra Farley put an end to it with a layup. Shead led 36-17 after three.
Shead led by as many as 26 in the final quarter, as Washburn couldn’t get any closer than 16. Shead outrebounded Washburn 24-13.
Washburn ends their season at 11-9. The Beavers got 10 points and five rebounds from Maggie Castonguay. Farley finished with nine points, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
Preston added four rebounds, two steals, and two assists to go along with her game high point total. Cassidy Wilder added nine points and nine rebounds, while Greenlaw had eight points, seven rebounds, and one blocked shot.
Shead (18-2), will play Southern Aroostook (19-1) in the Class D Northern Maine final Saturday morning at 9:05 a.m. The Warriors defeated Easton in the second semifinal on Thursday.
