University of Maine Baseball has a good weekend in Florida

The University of Maine Black Bears baseball team started their season with three losses at Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Winthrop swept the series over the Black Bears, including a pair of 12-5 final scores in the first two games. Winthrop rallied to earn a 3-2 win in the final game of the series. They scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Things changed for the Black Bears when they arrived to Del Ray, Florida. They took a single game over Central Connecticut 6-3. They followed that up by taking two games against South Dakota.  They ended the weekend by losing to Central Connecticut Stare.

On Saturday, Chad Kerbs singled home Hernen Sardinas for the game winning run in a 4-3 Black Bears win over SDSU. Connor Johnson and Jeff Gelinas combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief. Christopher Bec hit his first home run of the season.

Nick Silva, Eddie Emerson, and Zach Winn combined to pitch a shutout in 6-0 Black Bears victory over South Dakota State on Sunday. Bec and Tyler Schwanz each went 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Schwanz started the scoring with a lead off home run in the bottom of the first inning. Central Connecticut State scored three runs in the top of the third inning to get a 6-3 win and drop the Black Bears to 3-4 on the season.

Maine will next play St. Bonaventure on Saturday. That will start a stretch of four consecutive days of games between the two teams in Florida.
