BANGOR- The Machias Bulldogs boys basketball team rebounded their way to a 51-39 win over Greenville in the Maine Principals’ Association class D boys state championship game at the Cross Insurance Center on Saturday afternoon.
James Mersereau and Mark Anthony combined for 23 rebounds as the Bulldogs out rebounded the Lakers 40-25.
Nick Foley and the Lakers scored the first five points of the game and held a 13-11 lead after the first quarter. Foley had 11 of the 13 Greenville first quarter points.
The Lakers held a 17-15 lead in the second quarter. That was the last lead they would hold. Anthony gave the Bulldogs a lead (19-17) with 4:25 remaining in the first half that they wouldn’t give back. Machias held a 26-21 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs extended the lead to 33-23 early in the second half. John Massaad locked down the win by scoring 10 of his game high 19 points in the fourth quarter.
Mersereau put in 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Anthony recorded five points. 13 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, while Jordan Grant scored five points and had four assists.
It is the third state championship for Machias boys basketball and first since 1995. The Bulldogs finish the season with a 21-1 record.
Foley led the Lakers with 18 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Connor DiAngelo scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds, while Devin Boone recorded eight points, 11 rebounds, and two assists. The only two losses for Greenville (20-2) came against Machias.
