The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be the lone representative from Hockey East in this year’s Frozen Four in Chicago.
The #12 seed in the NCAA Tournament, got an overtime goal from Andrew Oglevie 2:44 into the extra session, to top another Hockey East opponent #4 seeded UMass-Lowell 3-2 to win the Northeast Regional Title on Sunday.
Notre Dame (23-11-5), in their final season in Hockey East will face the tournaments top seed, Jim Montgomerys Denver Pioneers, in one of the National semifinal games on Thursday, April 6th at 8:30 p.m.
Harvard and Minnesota-Deluth square off at 5 p.m. in the other semifinal, with the two winners to meet in the national championship game on Saturday, April 8 at 7 p.m.
Other NCAA tournament participants from Hockey East included Providence and Boston University. Providence lost in the quarterfinal round to Harvard, while BU topped North Dakota in two overtimes, before falling to Minnesota-Deluth in overtime Saturday.
The matchup between Denver and Notre Dame and the two coaches, Notre Dames Jeff Jackson and Denvers Montgomery, will be somewhat of a Frozen Four reunion. Jackson, was the coach of Lake Superior State in 1993, when Montgomery was a player for Maine, and led the Black Bears from 3-1 down after two periods to score three third period goals to cap a 42-1-2 season and the first national title for Maine.
