Bruins drop heartbreaker in game two at Ottawa

April 15, 2017

The Boston Bruins built a 3-1 lead Saturday afternoon against the Ottawa Senators after two periods at the Canadian Tire Center, only to see the Senators score two goals in the third period, and then netted an overtime game winner to pick up a 4-3 win and tie the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at 1-1.

Drew Stafford started the scoring at 9:47 of the second period to make it 1-0 Boston. Chris MacArthur would tie it for Ottawa just 1:10 later on the powerplay. 1:43 later Tim Schaller scored shorthanded to give the Bruins back the lead at 2-1. Patrice Bergeron put the Bruins up two goals at 3-1 with a powerplay marker at 16:01. It was the first two goal lead of the series for either team.

Chris Wideman and Derek Broussard scored goals though for Ottawa 2:20 apart at 5:38 and 7:58 of period three to tie the score at 3-3. The game would then head into overtime.

Zdeno Chara had taken a late delay of game penalty with just 12 seconds left in regulation, so the Bruins started the overtime shorthanded for 1:48. The Bruins would kill the powerplay, but just 11 seconds later Dion Phaneuf would score on a slapshot from just inside the left point to tie the series.

Both teams had 29 shots, Tuuka Rask stopped 25 shots while Craig Anderson made 26 saves to get the win. Boston was 1-3 on the powerplay, while Ottawa was 1-4.

The Bruins and Senators continue their series as the scene shifts to Boston for game three Monday at 7 p.m.
