Faythe Goins hit a pitch hit three run homer in the top of the fourth inning Friday afternoon, to propel the University of Maine softball team to a 4-1 win at University of Maryland-Baltimore County in the opener of a three game conference series.
UMBC had broke up on top first when DH Carly Lesko blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the first. But Maine evened it up when Felicia Lennon scored on an error in the top of the fourth, followed by the blast by Goins, her second of the year.
Erin Bogdonavich went the distance for her fifth win (5-7) in the circle for Maine allowing just one run, six hits, with no walks, and five strikeouts in seven innings.
Maine improves to 14-18 overall and now 8-1 in America East play with their fifth straight win. UMBC falls to 19-23, 3-6. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
