BANGOR, Maine- The Husson University softball team hosted a conference doubleheader Saturday against Johnson State College on their make-shift softball diamond, the John Winkin Complex. O’Keefe Field, the usual home of Husson softball, has been unplayable due to rain recently.
In game one, Husson starting pitcher Arika Brochu was dominant in the circle. Brochu (4-3) allowed just an infield single to leadoff hitter Abby McRae in the top of the first, and then retired 15 in a row as the Eagles took the mercy rule shortened five inning game 8-0.
Olivia Smith and Tamara Aunchman both had two RBI to lead the offense for Husson. Chloe Gorey and Brochu also chipped in an RBI each. Brochu had five strikeouts in the complete game effort.
In game two, Husson fell behind 2-0 in the fourth to the visiting Badgers, before rallying for an 8-2 win.
Hannah Leroux and Alannah Farley had RBI hits to stake the Badgers to the lead. Husson tied it on a wild pitch and a fielders choice in the bottom half of the fourth.
The Eagles took the lead in the fifth when Brochu smashed an RBI double down the left field line, and Nicole Andrade lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 4-2.
Gorey had an RBI hit, Aunchman reached on an error to score a run, as part of a four run sixth inning to finish off the Eagles scoring on the day.
Alannah Healy started the game in the circle and allowed just one earned run, and four hits in 3.2 innings. Jen Jones (5-4) picked up the win in relief as she went 3.1 innings, allowing no runs or hits, with seven strikeouts. Jones struck out seven of the 11 batters she faced.
Husson (21-9, 6-0 NAC) will play host to Lyndon State on Sunday for another NAC doubleheader again to be played at the Winkin Complex. First pitch is 12 p.m. Johnson State falls to 1-11, 0-4 with the two losses Saturday.
On the baseball diamond down at Lyndon State, the Husson Eagles swept away the Hornets 5-0 and 9-4.
Christian Corneil led the Eagles offense on the day with four hits and five RBI, including a big three run homer in game two. Sam Huston had two hits and four RBI as well in the game two win.
Ben Walls (5-1) was impressive once again going the distance to win game one, allowing no runs, four hits, and striking out four.
Freshman Jesse Colford (2-0) went the first six innings in game two to pick up the victory, allowing three earned runs, seven hits, with two walks, and had three strikeouts. Another freshman Jake Gauvin went the final inning and allowed an earned run on three hits.
Husson is now 18-12, 11-5 NAC. Lyndon State drops to 14-12, 7-7. The two teams will play another doubleheader Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
