Maine Athletics: Softball wins sixth straight, baseball swept

The University of Maine softball and baseball teams were in action Saturday afternoon. The softball team visited University of Maryland-Baltimore County while the baseball team was on the road at Binghamton.

In the softball contest, Alyssa Derrick continued her hot hitting as the Black Bears won their sixth straight game and went to 9-1 in America East play, with a 7-1 win over the Retrievers of UMBC in a shortened two game series.

Derrick had an RBI groundout in the first inning, and then hit her 11th and 12th homeruns of the season, both solo shots, in the third and seventh inning. Meghan Royle had three hits and an RBI, and Rachel Harvey also had an RBI. Maine is now 14-18 overall.

Molly Flowers (5-7) earned the win in the circle going 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run, four hits, two walks, with eight strikeouts.

The two teams were scheduled to play a three game series, but the second game was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up.

UMBC falls to 19-23, 3-7. Maine returns home to host UMass-Lowell Wednesday at 3 p.m. for a single game.

 

At Vestal, New York, the Maine baseball team were swept in a pair of games by the Binghamton Bearcats by scores of 9-3 and 7-4.

In game one, Brandon Vicens, Hernen Sardinas, and Tyler Schwanz provided the Maine offense with runs batted in as the Bears fell 9-3. Justin Courtney (4-4) took the loss on the hill going five innings, allowing five earned runs, eight hits, with three walks, and two strikeouts.

In game two, Cody Pasic hit a solo homer and Schwanz drew a bases loaded walk to provide the offense for Maine. The other two runs were unearned and scored on Bearcat errors in the Bears 7-4 loss. John Arel (1-1) only lasted one inning in the loss on the hill for Maine, allowing four earned runs, two hits, four walks, and a strikeout.

Maine is now 14-19 overall and 3-5 in America East. Binghamton goes to 19-7, 8-2. Maine and Binghamton finish off the three game series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
