CORINTH- The Hermon Hawks baseball team got a strong pitching performance from Alex Applebee’s and held off Central for a 6-4 win on Monday afternoon.
Hermon took advantage of five batters being hit by a pitch. That includes Mark Mailloux, who got hit to lead off the game and came around to score on a single from Zach Nash.
The Hawks also took advantage when Cody Hawes was hit by a pitch with one out in the second inning. Hawes came around to score on a single from Mailloux to make it 2-0.
The Red Devils bats came alive in the bottom of the second inning to score three runs. Ethan Mailman led off the inning with a single. Gage Poulin had a run scoring single, while James Doucette and Tanner Scott also had one RBI eachto give Central a 3-2 lead.
The lead didn’t last long as Hermon came up swinging in the third inning. The Hawks scored one run to even the score. All six batters during the inning swung at the first pitch and put it in play. That includes Nash who smacked a leadoff double and Christian Greener who followed with a single.
Hermon took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when Matt Leach hit a single that scored Keith Pomeroy. The Hawks added a run in each of their final two at bats.
Applebee pitched his best near the end of his outing. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced, including nine straight in a stretch that started in the third inning and extended into the sixth inning. Applebee allowed three runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out six.
Trask, Nash, and Leach had two hits each for the Hawks. Pomeroy had two RBI. Adam Rush allowed one unearned run in the seventh inning. Hermon (2-0) will play at Old Town on Thursday.
Nolan DeMoranville pitched a complete game for the Red Devils. He allowed six runs on nine hits and one walk, while striking out two. The five hit batters led to three runs for the Hawks. Central (0-3) will play at Bucksport on Wednesday.
