The University of Maine baseball team will begin play in the America East Tournament on Wednesday morning at LeLacheur Field in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Maine, who finished the regular season at 21-27 overall and 8-12 in America East, will enter the double elimination tournament as the #5 seed and will face the #4 seed Albany in the first game at 11 a.m.
Maine is led offensively by catcher Christopher Bec, who led the conference with a .360 average. He also led the conference with 17 doubles. Bec led the team with 64 hits. Sophomore shortstop Jeremy Pena is batting .303, and is tied for the team lead in RBI with 34. Pena was third in the America East with four triples. Senior right fielder Tyler Schwanz led the team with six homeruns, and is batting .272 and is tied with Pena with 34 RBI.
Overall the Maine pitching staff had a 5.11 ERA collectively. Maine opponents hit .262 off Black Bear pitching. Walks were often the problem, as Maine walked 247 hitters in 408.2 innings pitched.
Albany (24-24, 10-13 AE) took two of three games from Maine last weekend in Orono. All three games were decided by one run.
