HERMON- The Hermon Hawks softball team defeated Foxcroft 10-4 on Thursday afternoon in a Maine Principals’ Assocation class B quarterfinal game.
That sets up a Hermon/Old Town semifinal matchup for the fourth consecutive year. Hermon won the 2014 and 2015 matchup. Hermon won the state title in 2014 and the regional title in 2015. Old Town defeated Hermon 1-0 in the semifinal game last season. The Coyotes ended up winning the state championship. This year the third seeded Hawks will play at second seed Old Town on Saturday at 4 PM.
The Ponies got off to a quick start when they took advantage of a Hawks error and Grace Bickford drilled a double to the wall that scored two runs in the top of the first inning.
Hermon responded quickly when Laura Zenk led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk. Katie Windsor put down a sacrifice, moved all the way to third base on the Windsor bunt and came home on a Haley Perry grounder.
Hermon (16-1) took the lead when they scored four runs during the bottom of the second inning. Bre Oakes started the rally with a single, while Zenk had a run scoring single.
Hermon scored in five of their six innings they came to bat. Oakes, Windsor, and Rachel Balmas recorded two hits each. Zenk scored three runs and had two RBI. Perry, Oakes, and Balmas had one RBI each.
Oakes earned the win in the circle. She allowed four runs (one earned) on eight hits. Oakes walked one and struck out seven.
Bickford and Abi Bourget had three hits each for the Ponies. Bickford also scored two runs and had two RBI. Kilee Hutchinson had one RBI. Kenzie Beaudry took the loss in the circle for Foxcroft (13-5). She allowed 10 runs on eight hits and seven walks. She struck out six.
