Maine basketball coach Richard Barron underwent successful surgery Thursday at UCLA Medical Center in Northern California.
Barron, who had been dealing with a rare condition that was causing numbness and weakness in his arm and legs, has been on a leave of absence with the basketball team since early January.
Associate coach Amy Vachon took over the reigns in January as interim head coach, and will continue that position for the upcoming 2017-18 season.
There has been no word on Barrons return to the sideline. Barron has compiled an 85-89 record in his six seasons with the Black Bears.
Richards wife, Maureen, tweeted out a statement after the surgery Thursday. “Richards surgery went very well and he’s stable and comfortable. Grateful for your prayers, encouragement, and love”.
