July 15, 2017

Chris Sale pitched a dominant 7.2 innings. Long after Sale left the game, the Boston Red Sox fell to the New York Yankees 4-1 in 16 innings at Fenway Park in a game that started on Saturday afternoon and ended around 10 PM.

The Red Sox led 1-0 going to the ninth inning. Matt Holliday smashed a solo home run off Craig Kimbrel to even the score at 1.

The 16th inning started with a Jacoby Ellsbury double.  Ellsbury scored the go ahead run on a single from Didi Gregorius. The Yankees added two more runs on a single from Austin Romine and a sacrifice fly from Gary Sanchez.

Andrew Benintendi had three of the eight hits for the Red Sox. Mitch Moreland had the only RBI when he hit a sacrifice fly that scored Mookie Betts in the third inning.

Sale allowed three hits on two walks and 13 strikeouts in his shutout effort.  Both teams used seven relief pitchers as they get set for a day/night doubleheader on Sunday.
