With 65 games remaining and a three game division lead in the Major League baseball regular season for the Boston Red Sox, it’s time to look a few other promising prospects within the organization at the Minor League levels.
The most promising has to be third baseman Rafael Devers, who was recently promoted to Triple A Pawtucket. So far with the PawSox in 22 at bats, Devers is batting .364 with a pair of homers and four RBI. Devers hit .300 with 18 homers and 55 RBI in 77 games with the Double A Portland Sea Dogs before the recent promotion. It’s been speculated Devers could spend time in Boston this season with the troubles the team has had with production at third base.
Tzu-Wei Lin saw some time at third already this season, brought to Boston from Portland. Lin batted .280 with a pair of RBI in 50 at bats and scored seven runs in his limited time with the team before landing in Pawtucket recently.
In the pitching department this season, left hander Jalen Beeks has shown promise in both Triple A and Double A. Beeks, out of the University of Arkansas, has gone 5-1 with a 2.19 ERA in nine apperances with the Sea Dogs, and is 8-5 with a 2.63 ERA between Portland and Pawtucket.
Along with Devers, Rusney Castillo and Bryce Brentz have also had great seasons within the organization this 2017 season. Castillo, who has spent time in Boston previously, is hitting .300 with 10 homers and 31 RBI at Pawtucket. Brentz, who spent all of 2016 at Portland, is leading the PawSox with 20 homers to go along with a .275 average and 55 RBI.
Marcus Waldon is leading the way on the hill in Pawtucket with an 8-3 record and a 3.20 ERA. Both the PawSox and Sea Dogs are currently fourth in their respective divisions. The PawSox are 11.5 games out of first, while the Dogs sit 20 back of first place Trenton.
Other notable names Red Sox fans should keep an eye on in the days and years ahead at Portland include outfielders Danny Mars .307, 5 HR, 30 RBI and Jeremy Barfield .288, 11 HR, 31 RBI.
