The Boston Red Sox announced Tuesday night that they have made a trade to acquire infielder Eduardo Nunez from the San Francisco Giants.
The right handed hitter Nunez will add defensive versality to the Red Sox, and play third, shortstop, and either corner outfield. The Sox sent two minor league pitchers to the Giants in Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos to complete the deal.
Nunez is hitting .308 with four homers and 31 RBI in 76 games with San Francisco this year. Most likely Nunez will find time at third base or shortstop, where Xander Bogaerts has struggled only hitting .147 with two RBI since July 6. One of Bostons top prospects, Rafael Devers, played third base in his MLB debut Tuesday night going 0 for 4 at the plate in the extra inning loss at Seattle.
Nunez is in his eighth major league season. He broke into the big leagues in 2010 with the NY Yankees, where he stayed until 2013. He was with Minnesota from 2014-2016, before being traded to SF last year.
Nunez is expected to join the Sox Friday at Fenway Park when they open a homestand against the Kansas City Royals.
