GUILFORD- Zach Doore is only a sophomore. Doore showed the poise of a veteran when he drilled a corner kick into the goal in the final seconds to give the Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) Howlers a 2-1 win over Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) on Friday afternoon.
With time running out, Doore rushed to take the corner kick. Doore kicked it towards the front of the net. With multiple players in the area, the ball ended up in goal. Doore officially scored the goal with two seconds remaining.
“We kept one person back. Zach (Doore) quickly got the ball in, to his credit, he was quick to the ball. We pulled everyone in,”PVHS coach Jeremy Durost said. “Things like that happen when everyone is crashing. It is hard to come up with the ball with that many bodies around.”
Cody Sirois got the scoring started for the Howlers with 24:31 remaining in the first half. Sirois drilled one from about 30 yards out that sailed over Pirates goalie Sean Kimball’s head.
Dillion Drew evened the score with 11:16 remaining in the second half on an assist from Cameron Kane. The game remained even until the dramatics from Doore in the final seconds.
Howlers goalie Elijah Wood recorded 13 saves on 17 shots. PVHS (4-1) will host Lee Academy on Monday.
Kimball recorded four saves on 14 shots for the Pirates. PCHS (2-3) will travel to Greenville on Tuesday.
