UMaine Athletics: Soccer, Field Hockey split games

The University of Maine soccer team and field hockey team were both in action this past weekend, and it was a split for the Black Bear teams.

At Ithaca, New York Saturday a first half penalty kick that ended up in the net was enough to push Cornell past Maine womens soccer by a final of 1-0.

Cornell dominated shot attempts 22-7 and shots that ended up on goal 9-1, but it was Kaili Gregorys penalty kick that ended up the difference.

Annalena Kriebiach made eight saves in the Black Bear loss. Maine drops to 2-5-1, Cornell goes to 2-3.

Maine returns home Sunday to open up league play against Stony Brook at 1 p.m.

 

At Chase Astroturf Field in Hanover, New Hampshire Sunday the nationally ranked Maine Field Hockey team defeated Dartmouth 5-3.

Katie Spanos scored less than two minutes into the contest to give the Big Green the early lead, but goals by Samantha Wagg at the four minute mark and Brianna Ricker 11 minutes later gave the Bears a 2-1 halftime lead.

Brittany Smith, Madison Cummings, and Emily Hindle added second half goals as Maine improved to 5-2 on the season. Maine held a 20-6 shots attempted advantage, including 14-4 on net and also a 10-2 advantage on penalty corners. Emma Cochran made one save to earn the win in the Black Bear net.

Maine returns home to host Northeastern for their final non-conference game Friday at 3 p.m., before opening league play on Sunday in a neutral site tilt against Stanford at 12 p.m. at Durham, NH.
