GUILFORD– The Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) boys soccer team needed a win. Bryce Gilbert made sure they got that win on Friday afternoon.
Gilbert scored three goals to lead the Pirates to a 5-2 win over Mattanawcook.
Gilbert got the scoring started with 15:58 remaining in the first half. The Lynx responded quickly when Bailey Markus even the score just 18 seconds after the Gilbert goal.
A scary moment happened when Cameron Johnstone went down with an apparent serious leg injury with 11:23 remaining in the first half. The Lynx senior was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
Dillion Drew gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead when he converted a penalty kick with 32 minutes left in the second half. Just 2:56 later, Gilbert converted a penalty kick to give the Piratesa 3-1 lead.
The Pirates ended there 3:40 scoring spree when Cameron Kane scored on a Drew assist with 28:20 left in the second half.
John Farringtom cut the deficit to 4-2 for the Lynx when he made a penalty kick with 7:52 on the clock.
Gilbert rounded out the scoring with 6.8 seconds left on a corner kick. The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Pirates. Sean Kimball and Matt Robinson combined to record four saves on 10 shots. PCHS (3-4) will play at Penquis on September 26th.
Corbett Arnold recorded eight saves on 20 shots for the Lynx. Mattanawcook (2-4) will play at Lee Academy on Tuesday.
