DEXTER– Avery Herrick recorded two goals and one assist in leading the Dexter Tigers girls soccer team to a 6-0 win over Searsport on Monday afternoon.
The freshman (Herrick) set up the first goal of the game when she got the assist on a Danielle Cummings goal just 3:10 into the contest.
Cummings helped make it 2-0 when she assisted a Hannah Dorman goal with 30:35 left in the first half. Herrick gave the Tigers a 3-0 halftime advantage when she scored an unassisted goal with 23:33 remaining in the half,
Dexter dominated play against the short handed Vikings squad. Searsport had only 10 available players as they had four out, three with injury and one sick.
Dexter outshot Searsport 35-2, including 20-0 in the first half. Close Mountain and Peyton Grant each added one goal for the Tigers.
Dexter is now 7-1 on the season, they have outscored opponents 40-13. The goal of Coach Jody Grant and his team is to improve each day and to be playing their best when the playoffs start in approximately one month.
“We are just trying to play to get better. We don’t have any control about the games that already happened. We now have to play teams a second time,”Grant said. “We can’t be satisfied. If you start to be satisfied with success, you stop working. We are going to try and grind. We have played eight games, those eight games we don’t have control of.”
The Tigers will next play on Wednesday when they host Penquis. The game can be heard live at Eastern Maine Sports Broadcasting starting at 3:55 PM. Dexter defeated Penquis at Milo 5-3 on September 5th behind two goals from Herrick.
“They (Penquis) have pretty good team speed, especially up front. That can be tough to deal with. They have some very good players. They have good players up front, there keeper did a good job against us the first time, she made some nice saves. They are a competitive team,”Grant said. “They not only beat us both times last year, they came down here and annihilated us 5-1.”
Brooklynn Albens and Abby Stemp combined for 17 saves for the Vikings. Searsport (3-5) will play at George Stevens on Wednesday. Addyson Herrick made one save to register the shutout for the Tigers.
