A very busy weekend in University of Maine athletics. The womens soccer team, field hockey team, and both mens and womens ice hockey were all in action.
Kendra Ridley scored on a corner kick in the 15th minute Sunday to lead the UMaine Womens soccer team to a 1-0 win over UMBC in America East action at Mahaney Diamond. Maine is now 4-6-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Bears hit the road to face UNH on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Hana Davis scored on a steal and breakaway in overtime Sunday to lead the UMaine Field hockey team to a come from behind 3-2 win over UMass-Lowell at Lowell, Massachusetts.
Maine trailed 2-0 at the half, but got two second half goals by Brianna Ricker to tie the contest and the winner by Davis in the extra session.
Maine is now 7-3 and 1-1 in America East and will host Albany Friday at 3 p.m.
On the ice, the UMaine Womens ice hockey team came up with a split at the Alfond over the weekend with #9 Quinnipiac.
After a tough 2-1 loss on Friday in the season opener, Lydia Murray scored the game winning goal in the second period Saturday to lead Maine to a 4-2 win.
Tereza Vanisova had a goal and two assists in the win, and goaltender Carly Jackson made 32 saves as the Bears started their season at 1-1.
Maine will travel to RPI Friday for a 6 p.m. faceoff.
In exhibition action Sunday, the UMaine Mens ice hockey team also came up with a win by a score of 3-1 over Acadia at Alfond Arena.
Freshman defenseman Alexis Binner scored a powerplay goal, while junior defenseman Rob Michel scored shorthanded to lead the Bears in the pre-season tuneup.
Rob McGovern made three saves, and Jeremy Swayman made 14 stops in the Maine goal. Maine outshot Acadia 40-18.
Maine opens up the regular season and Hockey East schedule at home Friday when they play host to UConn. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
