@ Dover-Foxcroft, Simison Wanimbo Scored two goals to lead the Foxcroft Ponies boys soccer team to a 3-1 win over MDI on Thursday afternoon.
The season is winding down and the game had a playoff feel. The Ponies are currently eighth in the Maine Principals’ Association class B heal point standings. Foxcroft (7-6) is looking to stay eighth so they can host a prelim game. The Ponies will end the regular season at home against John Bapst on Monday.
The top 14 teams make the tournament in class B. MDI (3-10) currently are 14th.
Foxcroft struck first at the 11 minute mark, when Bojia Yang fed the ball between two MDI defenders and Wanimbo beat them to the ball. He had a one on one breakaway with the goalie and was able to place the ball just out of his reach, for a 1-0 lead. MDI responded 10 minutes later, when they scored from a scramble in front of the goat from a corner kick. But Wanimbo was not finished, as he struck again with 13 minutes to go in the first half. This time he stole the ball from an MDI defender as he dribbled by two other defenders, he was able to get inside the penalty area. MDI’s Keeper came out to quickly cut the angle on his shot, but Simison shot a rocket into the back of the net, for a 2-1 halftime lead.
In the second half MDI seemed to come out with more intensity. They outshot FA in the second half 13 to 6. They got the shots but were not able to capitalize on it. FA’s defense bent but did not break. Thanks to stellar performances from their Sweeper, Jacob Diamond, and Freshman Keeper, Lucas Ames. Jacob Diamond ran down MDI’s Forwards and was able to clear the ball out numerous times. He seemed to be everywhere. MDI was able to get behind FA’s defense a couple of times, but when they had breakaways opportunities, Ames was able to shut them down. With 20 minutes to go, FA was finally able to get another goal to give them room to breath. Yang again was able distribute ball to the open man when the defense collapsed on him. With Cody Tetlow running open on the left side of the field, he was able to get the ball on the run, getting by the whole defense he got inside the penalty box and placed the ball to the far side post, to give the Ponies a key late season win.
