GUILFORD– The Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates boys soccer team went through a 10 game span during the regular season where they allowed an average of 4.9 goals per game.
Coach Trey Gilbert and the Pirates made an adjustment. PCHS has only allowed two goals in their last three games, including a 2-0 win over Sumner in a Maine Principals’ Association class C preliminary round game on Saturday afternoon.
Bryce Gilbert and Cameron Kane were part of the adjustment, the duo was also part of the first goal of the game. Kane set up Gilbert, who put the ball past Tigers goalie Alex Rumill. Gilbert and Kane were able to produce that goal, despite them now being keys for the new look Pirates defense.
“Cameron (Kane) was my right wing, Bryce (Gilbert) was my offensive mid. We placed them back on defense,”Trey Gilbert said. “We are a little more solid on defense. We had a lot of goals scored on us this year and we are trying to cut that back.”
Even when the Tigers were able to get near the goal, Damyan True and Sean Kimball were there to protect the shutout. Kimball recorded 12 saves on 13 shots.
Coach Gilbert said, “even if they get by Bryce or Cameron on the outside, we still have Damyan True, who is a solid player back there. Big kid with a big foot.”
Dillion Drew gave the Pirates a two goal lead when he took an assist from Gilbert with 12:28 left in the first half. The Pirates defense took care of the rest. PCHS (8-6-1) will travel to top seed Fort Kent for a quarterfinal clash. The class C tourney schedule will be updated here when official date and time of game is announced.
Rumill made seven saves on 10 shots for the Tigers. Sumner finishes their season with a record of 9-5-1.
