Five goal outburst helps Maine hockey salvage weekend split

The University of Maine mens ice hockey team scored the games first five goals in the first period, and went on to score a 6-3 non-conference victory over Miami of Ohio Saturday night at Alfond Arena.

Eduards Tralmaks scored just 1:01 into the contest to make it 1-0, and was followed just 1:21 later on a powerplay goal by Patrick Holway to make it 2-0. Brady Keeper, Patrick Shea, and a powerplay marker from Mitchell Fossier followed in the first to make it 5-0. A late first period powerplay goal by Phil Knies got Miami on the board.

Tim Doherty made it 6-1 in the second for Maine (2-2), while the Redhawks got the final two goals of the game on the powerplay from Grant Hutton in the second and third period. Keeper and Holway both had a goal and two assists, while Fossier and Tralmaks both had a goal and an assist. Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves on 30 shots in the Black Bear net. Miami was 3-6 on the powerplay (7-11 on the weekend), while Maine went 2-7.

Miami-Ohio (1-3), was led by Hutton with a pair of goals and an assist. Ryan Larkin made 18 saves on 23 shots overall. Grant Valentine stopped two of three shots in the short action he saw in the Redhawks cage.

Maine will be back action next weekend when they host the national runners up from last year, #9 Minnesota-Deluth. Fridays game faces off at 7 p.m., while puck drop is 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
