Both the University of Maine basketball teams were back at home at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor Tuesday night, hosting a pair of in state Division III teams, and as expected it was a sweep for the Black Bears.
In the womens game, Maine (5-4) broke a school record by knocking down 16 three point baskets, rolling to an 89-49 win over Maine Maritime Academy.
Blanca Millan led the way with 24 points (6-7 three point range). Millan added eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Tanesha Sutton had 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Julie Brosseau added 12 points. Maine built a 25 point halftime lead, and led by as many as 50 in the third quarter on 55 percent shooting from the floor in the game.
Alayne Felix had 21 points and five rebounds for MMA (3-3). The Mariners shot just 36 percent from the floor and had 29 turnovers, which was converted into 36 Black Bear points.
Maine travels to NH Saturday for a noon time tipoff with Dartmouth.
On the mens side, Aaron Calixte had 15 points as Maine outlasted UMaine-Presque Isle 75-55.
Vernon Lowndes Jr. added 14 points and five rebounds, while Ilker Er added 10 points and six rebounds. Maine shot 50 percent from the floor, including 11 three pointers. The Bears record goes to 2-7. Maine had a 33-4 scoring edge in bench points.
Kevin Collins had 18 points and six rebounds for UMPI (3-4). Maurice Harris also added 14 points for the Owls. UMPI shot just 34 percent from the floor.
Maine returns to action Friday at home when they welcome in Dartmouth for a 7 p.m. contest.
