GUILFORD– Bryce Gilbert scored 17 of his game high 26 points in the second half to lift the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates to a 55-50 win over Greenville on Thursday night.
The Pirates held a 14-10 lead after the first quarter, behind the hot shooting of Cam Kane, who nailed 3 three pointers in the first eight minutes. Gilbert scored nine points in the second quarter as PCHS again outscored Greenville 14-10 to take a 28-20 halftime lead.
“It is always good when Cam (Kane) can heat up in the beginning,”Gilbert said. “it will open the floor for everybody and create more open shots.”
The Lakers came out strong in the second half. They went on a 9-2 run that cut the deficit to 30-29. Freshman Caleb Willis nailed a three pointer that gave the Pirates a 33-29 lead. PCHS held a 36-32 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Gilbert said, “we just had to settle down and play better defense and take less quick shots on offense.”
Connor DiAngelo scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter, including putting the Lakers ahead 40-38 as they started the quarter on an 8-2 run. Damyan True made two free throws to even the score at 40. DiAngelo gave the Lakers a 43-40 lead with a three pointer.
Gilbert scored eight consecutive points as the Pirates took a 48-45 lead. Noah Pratt evened the score at 48. Kane put the Pirates ahead to stay with a three pointer.
Gilbert filled up the stat sheet with 10 rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. He now has 967 career points. Kane recorded 12 points,three rebounds, and three assists.True scored six points and pulled down eight rebounds. Kobe Gilbert scored five points, including a three pointer, Willis put in five points, while Adam Bagley connected on one free throw. PCHS (2-0) is scheduled to host Dexter on Thursday, December 21st. The game can be heard live at Eastern Maine Sports.
Nick Foley scored 18 points to lead the Lakers. He also had six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Devin Boone scored 13 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Pratt put in five points, while Evan Bjork scored five points and pulled down six rebounds. Greenville (0-1) will travel to Forest Hills on Saturday.
