DEXTER– Avery Herrick scored 10 of her game high 19 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Dexter Tigers to a 48-29 girls basketball victory over Stearns on Friday night at Ed Guiski gymnasium.
Stearns took a 1-0 lead on a Katherine Alley free throw. Dexter took a lead they wouldn’t give back on a Herrick jumper. The Tigers built the lead to 5-1 on a Peyton Grant three pointer. Stearns cut the deficit to 5-3 on a Peighton Ingersoll basket. Dexter scored the final four points of the first quarter and their lead wouldn’t go below five the rest of the way.
The Tigers held a 24-13 halftime lead as the freshmen duo of Grant (10) and Herrick (7) combined for 17 first half points.
The Minutemen cut the deficit to six in the third quarter, Grant nailed a three pointer and Herrick hit a jumper late in the quarter to help the Tigers build the lead to 34-23 heading into the final quarter.
Dexter outscored Stearns 15-6 in the fourth quarter, including going 7-8 from the free throw line. Herrick went 4-4 from the line and made three 2 point baskets in the final eight minutes.
Dexter out rebounded Stearns 37-25. Becca Batron and Herrick combined for 29 rebounds. Batron pulled down 19 rebounds. Herrick finished with a double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds. Grant scored 15 points (4-4 FT) and had three steals. Cheyenne Beem scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds. Kaitlyn Webber and Batron had three points each. Dexter (7-1) will host PVHS on Friday, January 5th. Coverage will begin at 5:55 at Eastern Maine Sports.
Ingersoll led Stearns (6-2) with 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Julia Stanley recorded eight points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Alley added seven points, four rebounds, and three steals. Calli Waceken chipped in with three points. Stearns will play at Mattanawcook on January 5th.
