Nolan Vesey scored two goals in the first 3:13 of the first period Friday night, to propel the University of Maine mens ice hockey team a 3-2 win over Rensselaear Polytechnic Institute at Houston Field House in Troy, New York.
Rob McGovern made 27 saves in net to help Maine improve to 9-7-1 on the season. McGovern is getting his chance this weekend while freshman goalie Jeremy Swayman is away playing for the USA junior national team.
Vesey added an assist to go along with his two goals. Patrick Shea added a pair of assists for two points as well. Tim Doherty added the other Black Bear goal. Billy Jerry and Evan Tironese scored for the 3-12-3 Engineers. Maine was 0-1 on the powerplay, while RPI was 1-1.
Maine is now 5-0-1 in their last six games, and will go for weekend sweep over RPI Saturday with faceoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
