HAMPDEN, Me- The Hampden Academy girls basketball team got some redemption Friday night at the Stable. The Broncos knocked off the top ranked Skowhegan Indians 56-49, behind 16 points from junior center Bailey Donovan.
The game was the second matchup of the season between the Broncos and Indians. Skowhegan won by nine at Skowhegan back on December 19. The win Friday catapaults Hampden into first place in Class A North at 8-1.
Skowhegan (6-2), took a five point lead after one quarter at 14-9, and extended to their largest lead of the contest at 19-10 in the second quarter. Hampden ended the first half on an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to 24-21 at the half.
An Alydia Brillant jumper and a three pointer by Brooklyn Scott gave Hampden their first lead with the mini 5-0 spurt to begin the third quarter at 26-24. The Broncos had their largest lead at that point of three late in the third on a three pointer from Peyton Smith. Hampden led 39-38 headed to the final eight minutes.
Neither team led by more than one or two points for the first six minutes of the last quarter. Donovan knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 50-46 with two minutes left. Scott nailed two from the line at both the 1:10 and 1:03 mark to give Hampden an eight point lead and secure the victory.
Donovan added seven rebounds and four blocked shots for the Broncos. Scott finished with 12 points and had five rebounds. Camryn Bouchard chipped in 12 points, all coming from four three point shots.
Annie Cooke had 10 points to lead the Indians. Lindsey Warren and Emma Duffy added eight points a piece.
Hampden returns to action Tuesday when they host Messalonskee at 6:30 p.m., and Skowhegan also plays at home Tuesday hosting Nokomis at 7 p.m.
