ORONO, Me- Michelle Weis scored two goals Friday afternoon, including a late empty netter to send the #9 Maine womens ice hockey team to a 4-1 Hockey East win over Merrimack College at Alfond Arena.
Lydia Murray began the scoring with a powerplay goal at 17:50 of the first to make it 1-0. Merrimack struck back to even the game on a goal from Katelyn Rae at 4:44 of the second to make it 1-1.
Brooke Stacey scored the eventual game winner 1:07 into the third on the powerplay to make it 2-1. 58 seconds later, Weis made it 3-1. Weis added the empty net goal at 19:48. Carly Jackson made 29 saves on 30 shots in the Black Bear goal. With the win, Maine won their fifth consecutive game and extended their unbeaten streak to 10 (8-0-2). Maine was 2-3 on the powerplay, while Merrimack was 0-3. The Warriors drop to 8-15-3, 3-11-2 in Hockey East, while the Bears are now 16-6-3, 10-3-2.
Maine will host Merrimack to finish the two game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the annual skating strides against breast cancer game.
