Chase Pearson scored two goals to lead the Maine Black Bears to a 3-2 win over UMass Saturday night in Hockey East mens ice hockey at Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts before 3,934 fans.
Pearson started the scoring just 18 seconds into the game to give Maine the early lead. Mitchell Chaffee tied the game for UMass at 14:45 of the first to make it 1-1.
Emil Westerlund gave the lead back to the Black Bears at 8:05 of the second period making it 2-1. Pearson got the game winner 4:46 later to make it 3-1 Maine. The Minutemen got one back on the powerplay from John Leonard with five minutes to play in the third period, but it wasn’t enough as Maine picked up the weekend sweep.
Jeremy Swayman picked up the win in net for Maine with 28 saves, as the Bears improve to 14-9-4, 8-6-3 in Hockey East. Ryan Wischow made 23 saves in the losing effort for UMass. The Minutemen are now 11-14-1, 5-10-1. The Bears were 0-2 on the powerplay, while the Minutemen went 1-4.
Maine returns home Friday and Saturday to host Merrimack College. Fridays game is set for 7:30 p.m., while Saturday the two teams face off at 7 p.m.
