Nick Foles earned the Super Bowl MVP by outdueling Tom Brady and Matt Patricias defense Sunday night to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 41-33 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Foles was 28-43 passing, 373 yards, three touchdowns and one interception to help lead the Eagles to their first Lombardi Trophy in team history. Philadephia (16-3), also got 90 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown from former Patriot Legarrette Blount. Corey Clement, Alshon Jeffery, and Zach Ertz caught touchdown passes, while Foles caught one in the second quarter on a flea flicker play from Trey Burton. Ertz catch and score with just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning play.
Tom Brady had a very solid game and was 28-48, 505 yards, with three touchdowns. The 505 yards by Brady was most ever for him in his eighth Super Bowl game. Brady had given the Patriots the lead 33-32 on a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski. The Patriots (15-4) had trailed 22-12 at halftime and 29-19 in the third quarter. James White rushed seven times for 45 yards and a score, while Chris Hogan caught a TD pass and Gronksowki had two. Hogan had six receptions for 128 yards, while Gronksowki had nine catches for 116 yards. The Patriots were without receiver Brandin Cooks from the second quarter on, after he took a hard hit from Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and appeared to suffer a concussion. Patrick Chung and Devin McCourty both had six tackles on defense, while Duron Harmon had an interception.
The Patriots fall to 5-3 in Super Bowl games in the Brady/Belichek era, and 5-5 in all time Super Bowl games as a franchise. The Philadephia championship ends an 84 year drought, as the Eagles were first formed as a team in 1933.
