BANGOR– The George Stevens boys basketball team showed the heart of a champion on Tuesday afternoon.
The two-time defending state champions got big contributions from their senior leaders in a 55-43 victory over Houlton in a Maine Principals’ Association class C quarterfinal game.
The Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never trailed. They held a 17-12 lead after the first quarter and 35-24 at the half. Taylor Schildroth scored 16 of his game high 23 points in the first half. Schildroth’s senior classmate Max Mattson pulled down 12 of his 20 rebounds in the first half.
The third quarter was highlighted by a Schildroth pass off the backboard to Mattson, who slammed it in.
Schildroth had four assists and three steals to go along with his game high point total. Mattson also had six blocks and three assists. Caden Mattson and Reece Dannenberg put in seven points each. George Stevens (18-1) will take on Fort Kent in a semifinal game on Friday night.
Cam Cleary had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Shires. Keegan Gentle added 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Houlton finishes the season with a 15-5 record.
