BANGOR– At a news conference at the Cross Insurance Center on Wednesday afternoon, the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) announced the AA/A/B North and South, and C/D North and South player selections for the 2018 Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games.
The 2018 semi-finalist for Miss Maine and Mr. Maine basketball were also announced for the first time. Max Mattson and George Stevens teammate Taylor Schildroth along with Jacob Godfrey and Hermon teammate Keenan Marseille were among the 10 named as semi-finalists for Mr.Basketball.
Godfrey won a state championship playing for Machias high school last season. This season, he has helped the top seed Hawks reach the semifinals where they will Winslow tonight at 8:35 PM
“I am always having fun. It has been fun playing against different competition this season,”Godfrey said. “It was tough building chemistry at first but I am playing on a great team this year. I played on a great team last year. It has been a good experience.”
Mattson grabbed 20 rebounds, while Schildroth had 23 points in a George Stevens quarterfinal win over Houlton on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles will play Fort Kent in a semifinal game on Friday evening,
“They (Fort Kent) are a good team. We played them a couple of years ago in the quarterfinals. They have most of those kids back. I think they have a pretty strong group,”Schildroth said. “They have some height too. Max will have some challenges down there. We will have a game plan and hopefully be ready for them.”
Many of this group on the Mr, Maine Basketball list have played with or against each other in AAU leagues throughout the years.
“have played AAU with them since the 8th grade. I played against Keenan in travel ball in middle school,”Mattson said. “I have played for a while so you get to know a lot of people.”
Schildroth added, “I have played with Terion (Moss from Portland), and Zac (Manoogian from Westbrook) and most of them, if not with them, I have played against them at some point. It is great being on the list with this group.”
It is a great honor to be considered one of the 10 best basketball players in Maine. The focus for Marseille and the Hawks is their tournament run.
“It is a great honor, it is something I look forward to,”Marseille said. “I focus more on my team, we still have a chance to win it. Like I said, it is a great honor, but I can’t wait to get on the floor tonight.”
While Kolleen Bouchard is looking forward to the Shires next game on Friday afternoon against Central. They beat the Red Devils twice during the regular season.
“I think we need to come out and player really hard and set the tempo,”Bouchard said. “We have a very good team, if we play like we do, I think we have a good chance.”
While the focus is on the tournament run, Bouchard knows it will be something special to be named Miss Maine Basketball. If she wins the award on March 10th, she would join her brother Kyle Bouchard, who was named Mr. Basketball in 2015.
“Bouchard said, “it would be cool,I think we would be the first brother/sister combo to win it. That would make it even more special.”
