BANGOR, Me- Logan Thompson scored a game high 16 points, including 10 in the second half, leading the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx to a 45-37 Class C boys quarterfinal win over th PVHS Howlers Wednesday morning at the Cross Insurance Center.
Mattanawcook had an early 6-0 lead, and PVHS didn’t get on the board until almost five minutes in as the Lynx held a 9-5 lead at the end of first quarter. The Lynx got a scare in the second quarter when one of their top performers, guard Alex Brown, went down and appeared to twist his ankle. MA still held onto the lead 18-17 at halftime.
Brown returned midway through the third quarter, and played most of the second half despite a noticeable limp. In the third quarter, the Lynx built the lead to nine points when Bailey Markie knocked down a three pointer. MA led 32-24 after three.
PVHS (14-6), made a run in the fourth as Grant Kidon knocked down a three, Elijah Wood scored a basket, and Brad McKechnie knocked down all three foul shots after being fouled on a three point attempt to tie the game at 32-32. But Mattanawcook (14-6) ended the game on a 13-5 run, including a steal and slam dunk by Cayden Spencer-Thompson.
Spencer-Thompson added 12 points for the Lynx, while Corbett Arnold also chipped in with six. Brown had four points and seven rebounds. MA will play the winner of PCHS/Ft. Fairfield in a semifinal game Friday night.
The Howlers were led by Wood, who finished with 13 points. Kidon added nine, while McKechnie chipped in with eight.
