AUGUSTA– The Monmouth Mustangs went on an 11-0 run to end the first quarter and held off Houlton for a 56-50 Class C girls basketball state championship victory on Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
Monmouth held a 22-9 lead after the first quarter and the lead didn’t get under 10 until the fourth quarter. Abbey Allen (10) and Tia Day (9) combined for 19 first half points as the Mustangs held a 33-21 halftime lead.
Kolleen Bouchard scored 10 points in the third quarter but the Shires were only able to cut the deficit down to 11 at the end of the third quarter.
Bouchard was able to score 10 more points in the fourth quarter and the Shires cut the deficit down to four (54-50) late in the fourth quarter. Day secured the win for the Mustangs with two free throws.
It is the second straight state title for the Mustangs. Allen scored 15 points to lead Monmouth. Day added 14 including 4 three pointers. Monmouth (21-1) made 8 three pointers.
Bouchard recorded 35 points, seven rebounds, five blocks, four assists, and three steals. Bouchard ends a remarkable high school career with over 2000 points. She helped the Shires win four regional titles and two state titles. Houlton finished the season with a 21-1 record.
