In the most successful season as a varsity hockey team, the #10 Maine Black Bears saw their season end on Saturday evening in the Hockey East semifinals with a tough 2-1 loss to Northeastern at Matthews Arena in Boston.
Daria Tereshkina had given the lead to Maine 1-0 on a goal at 3:06 of the opening period. Northeastern had the answer however late in the period, as Veronika Pettey scored with 11 seconds left to make it 1-1.
Matti Hartman provided the game winner at the 5:27 mark of the third period. Maine battled to the end, controlling play in the final period and outshooting the Huskies 15-6 in the stanza, but however could not come up with the equalizer.
Aerin Frankel got the win in the Northeastern net with 24 saves. Carly Jackson made 25 in the loss for Maine. Neither team could connect on the powerplay, as Maine was 0-2 and Northeastern was 0-4. Northeastern is now 18-16-3 and will take on UConn in the Hockey East title game Sunday at 1:30 p.m. UConn upset top seed Boston College 4-2 in the first semifinal Saturday. Maine finishes their season at 19-14-5, the most wins in program history.
