Successful Maine season comes to an end with loss at Texas

The University of Maine Black Bears saw their season come to an end Saturday evening at the hands of the Texas Longhorns 83-54 in an NCAA first round game at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.

#2 seeded Texas shot 62 percent from the floor in the game, while Maine only shot 36 percent. The Longhorns jumped out to a 15 point lead after one quarter, and stretced it to 27 by halftime. Maine trailed by as many as 35 in the contest. The America East champions from Maine finished off a very successful campaign with a final overall record of 23-10. The Bears were the 15th seed and in the tournament for first time since 2004.

Maine was dominated inside by the bigger and more athletic Texas team, getting outrebounded 43-12 in the game, including 10 offensive rebounds by the Horns. Tanesha Sutton led the Bears with 16 points, while Julie Brosseau had 11. Leading scorer Blanca Millan was held to just seven points on the day on 3-13 shooting.

Texas (27-6), was led by Jatarie White who had 17 points. Ariel Atkins had 16, while Lashann Higgs chipped in 15 points. The Longhorns will meet Arizona State in round two on Monday evening.
