The Husson Eagles softball team swept a non conference doubleheader with Newbury College Saturday afternoon in games that were moved to Colby College in Waterville due to the Husson field conditions.
In game one, Olivia Smith belted a three run homer in the bottom of the first, three of her five RBI, to lead Husson to a mercy rule shortened 8-0 five inning win.
Madelyn Fowler and Smith had three hits a piece, while Tamara Aunchman and Kendra Wilson each had two hits. Jen Jones (1-3) picked up the win in the circle going 5.0 innings allowing just two hits and striking out four.
In game two, Newbury jumped on the Eagles early for a 3-0 first inning lead that included RBI hits from Noelle Sass and Alexis Vieira.
Chloe Goreys RBI double for Husson made it 3-1 in bottom of first, and Jones hit an RBI groundout in second to cut it to 3-2. Smith roped an RBI double in bottom of third to tie it 3-3, before Aunchmans RBI single gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Kylie Cunningham added an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to secure a 5-3 Husson win.
Jones (2-3) earned her second win of the day in the circle allowing two earned runs on five hits in 7.0 innings. Husson improves to 3-7, while the Nighthawks of Newbury dipped to 4-8. Husson will host a pair of exhibition contests Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. with Southern Maine Community College at Boucher Field on the campus of Husson University.
